Forget your typical sunny Sunday barbecue – it’s so 2010. The latest trend is having a brunch for friends and family; inviting them over mid-morning for some tasty treats.
So instead of hosting your usual hot-dog-laden, burnt-burger-serving barbecue this Sunday, why not arrange to have your besties over for some waffles and pancakes?
Firstly, you’ll need to check the weather. If the sun’s predicted to come out, then you can start by tidying up your garden a bit. Make sure your plastic, metal or teak garden furniture is clean and not bug-ridden. Make the lawn a bit more presentable by trimming the grass and be sure to check the ground for any rogue dog poops if Rover’s been running around.
Secondly, get your invites out quickly. As the summer season is coming to an end, you’ll find many of your friends are booked up weeks in advance for weekend events. Why not phone or text them rather than sending out paper invites? This is more economical and gets your RSVPs in quicker.
Next, consider your menu. Typical favourites you can serve include waffles, pancakes, crispy bacon, blueberries and strawberries. Sausage patties, corned beef hash and French toast also go down well. If you’re really pushing the boat out, blueberry muffins and the odd cocktail wouldn’t go amiss. Brunch-friendly cocktails are typically fruity yet pack a punch – think Bloody Mary, Mimosa, Sex on the Beach and Cosmopolitan.
Be sure to ditch your fried eggs, tomatoes and greasy black pudding – this is breakfast American-style.
Lastly, you’ll want some chilled-out tunes playing in the background to set the scene, so get a playlist lined up on your iPod. A quick check that you’ve got enough cutlery, crockery and glasses is also necessary.
Once you’ve done all this, you’re good to go! Just don’t forget to pick up the maple syrup – a must for any authentic Sunday brunch
